Day 9

I admit to being just the tiniest bit lazy on Tuesday, however I did manage to get everything done that was possible. I spent the morning on the computer. I had to photograph and put together some jpegs of a few finished pieces to send off to two of my galleries. And I had quite a bit of email correspondence with three galleries, in order to schedule dates and times for the delivery of paintings next week.

This afternoon I put a final coat on two barn paintings and the large landscape, touched up two of the other barns, which will be ready to final coat tomorrow. I also applied the first red glaze on the remaining three barn paintings and did the first coat of paint on the cradles on a few of the completed pieces. While this might sound as if it was a lot of work it really wasn't and I spent most of the day doing various things around the house. Puttering again, I guess.

I will begin to post the finished work in their final jpeg formats, like usual, next week. I am very happy with how this work is turning out, especially given how close to total burn out I am. However I hope that I won't always have to have this much pressure in order to create a few batches of good paintings!

Also, I wanted to give a plug to a very informative blog that I found today through Art Biz Blog, well now I guess that's two plugs. Artist, Emerging is written by artist Deanna Wood who is documenting her efforts at establishing an art career. I covered similar territory last spring in a few of my posts, but Deanna is much more thorough and does a great job of explaining the different aspects of where and how to direct your efforts. I also realized while reading through her posts that even though I still consider myself an emerging artist, maybe I am not really anymore. I am not exactly established yet either, but I haven't had to really market my work for quite awhile so perhaps it's time to reassess what I am doing. Well, when I have some time that is.

This purple barn is very very nice. However, your schedule exhausts me so I'm going to go take a nap.

Ha! Have a nice nap-I am envious!

Thanks for your comment on my blog! I like how you're documenting your process - it's really interesting to see works change over time. It makes me want to go to my studio!

I found Deanna's blog yesterday also. It's really a wonderful resource she is providing all of us.

And it sounds like you are maybe starting on the backside of this round of work with a few of the paintings finished. Congrats - it's been fascinating to read about - thanks for posting during this very busy time.

The term "emerging artist' is so ambiguous... compared to what? Or who? I still think of myself as 'emerging' even though I'm also trying to wrap it up, in a sense. 'Established' follows emerging, I guess, though still far from being a household name (even in art circles.) Yet could imply established within your own neighborhood, or regionally, or nationally. And then, for how long? AW's 15 minutes or a full career's worth? Ummm... all so fuzzy...

Thanks, Deanna and I am glad you like seeing my process. I hope you'll talk a bit about yours (though maybe you have and I didn't see it in the archives), I love encaustic.

Lisa, I am finishing up the work for this project, only three left! Of course I immediately have to start over again for another show, but I am not going to worry about that today. I am glad that this has been interesting.

I agree Karen, so many fuzzy adjectives and so many different circumstances. I am not expecting to be well-known, but I do hope to have relatively steady exhibition opportunities. That would be "established" to me, I think.

Shan, Thanks, I like the barn too, the pattern of the windows really attracted me. One thing I didn't want to change in this scene!

Lovely Tracy! The red paintings really appeal to me at the moment as I just finished a red piece.
The first one looks great too.

Thanks Angela, The red pieces are in progress, they will be glazed over with other colors. It's hard to tell in the picture but they are really intense.

But I like red and it is a color I used to use often though I have drifted away from it a bit lately. I am sure I'll get back to it again.

I'm not really sure what "emerging artist" means, either. It seems to be a default category - I'm a little more advanced than a student, but not "established" or "mid-career." Hmmm... I think I might just have to blog about this!

Deanna, it does sound like a good topic for a blog. I think that it's interesting that there seems to be a label for each level of an artist's career.
