Sorry, I am Talking Politics Today (edited to add10/27/08**)

I have managed to get some work done in the studio over the last week, but in between that I have also become completely obsessed with the stories about Sarah Palin and her supposed faked pregnancy. A very juicy story and it would pretty incredible if any part of it turns out to be true. And I don't mean incredible in a good way either. Anyway, this blog has had much of my attention as the author seems pretty reasonable and brings up some good points.

It's not like I was going to vote for McCain/Palin though, as I am a proud liberal and registered democrat, but the lack of judgment by both of them, personally and politically, is breathtaking. I am in awe that either of them have gotten this far.

Perhaps it has to do with people like this:

I hope that Obama wins (although I still wish that Hillary was on the ticket) and I think he will, barring, you know, theft of the election by the republican party. However, I fear for him if he does win.

**It has come to my attention that someone who "used to like my art" visited the site I linked to above and left a troll-like comment. At the risk of giving this person too much attention, I would like to say publicly, first of all that I think that that is very rude behavior and second of all, that I am totally fine with someone changing their mind about liking my work just because I like to read what may be considered trash. I also enjoy reading through the National Enquirer on occasion too, just so you know. So if this is a problem for anyone, please feel free to go away. I am just a girl here, talking, making art, and expressing a few opinions here and there, and if that bothers anyone, I understand. But just go away then, there is no need to bug me or the people who do like to visit my blog, ok?

Here's a different perspective
Obama as we knew him... man and boy.

I'm with you, Tracy. I wish Clinton was on the ticket, but I'm still voting Democrat. I think, from what I've seen, that Palin is light years away from what we need in the White House. And I, too, sadly fear for Obama, especially after watching the video on your blog.

that's a good article Katherine, but what do you mean "a different perspective"? I already think Obama is a good guy.

Thanks Deborah, yeah, even without all the pregnancy rumors, Palin makes me very nervous.

palin scares me, plain and simple.. and I fear for Obama too if he wins as he must...

Palin makes me nervous on so many levels - her beliefs, her ethics, encouraging hate speech from her followers, and her ignorance of the job for which she was nominated. I've spent way too much time following politics lately but I've been fascinated by the number of mistakes McCain/Palin have made. Sometimes it seems like they're still stuck in the 60's and 70's. Granted I'm a liberal and Democrat too but this race could have been a whole lot closer.

You would think that W has been so awful that the dems could nominate a poodle and it would win....

Natalya, funny, at one point I typed that Palin scares me, but I deleted it. Glad to know you agree!

Sydney, oh my gosh I can't stand her speeches. I just feel like she is accusing Obama of all the stuff she does or wants to do. Projecting. And I too, despise her for promoting such hate towards her opponent, it shows how bad her character is, imo.

Gary, Mr. Wilson for president! Let's start a write in campaign! (Mr.Wilson is our black toy poodle and he is very smart:))

Nice post, Tracy! The video clip you included is CRINGE inducing. As a resident of NE OHIO, I can assure you we are not all ignorant rednecks & nincompoops. Obama is actually ahead here at the moment and he has my vote.

Don't worry Diane, I have lived in enough places to know that there are yahoos like that everywhere, (even in my own family in MN) but many more tolerant folks everywhere too. Thanks goodness.

Ladies if you really want to get scared you should check out

On You Tube, true story.

Tracy Helgeson said...

Anonymous, not sure why only ladies should be worried about this sort of thing but whatever. Of course, if this story is true, it is disturbing, however do you really think that the democrats have a lock on trying to silence dissenters of their own candidates?

Oh man!!! I think these views (hopefully) only represent a small portion of American society. No matter who you're voting for, at least educate yourself before you go giving taped interviews! JEEZ!

Actually, after thinking a bit more about this woman's clip, I'd like to add that I think the Secret Service simply reacted to a perceived threat against a candidate. Not quite so scary if one isn't actually making threats, waving weapons or doesn't engage in conversation with unsolicited phone callers (they'd go away if no one would talk to them).

Now. No more responses from me to an anonymous comment.

Sorry Tracy - I posted my comment after watching that scary video

I meant here's another perspective to the views expressed in the video. Sorry for not expressing it better - I KNOW you think Obama is a good guy.

What I liked about the article is it spoke of a man who listened and didn't act like a maverick or somebody who was going to 'go rogue. I don't want to see anybody who's going to threaten publicly to 'go rogue' anywhere near a button which could end the world as we know it.

Importantly, I've never ever known an election before where so many really prominent Republicans endorse the Democratic candidate.

Now I wonder what the reason for that might be? ;)

Wow, it really is scary that there are people out there in our own country like the ones in that clip. I am with you, Palin worries me for so many reasons. I sincerely want to see Obama win and succeed as the next president of our country. There will be a lot of challenges for him to face, but I believe he is the best choice to take them on.

The opinions like that expressed in the video clip you posted really expose the ugly truth about America. I hope this election sheds a bright light on the rampant bigotry so that more can be done. People don't see it in themselves. (Like the woman saying she is a Christian! hello) I'm at a loss.
Tracy, don't let the troll that commented bother you. If they can't enjoy art made by a person with a differing opinion then they are missing the whole point. By the way, I've been following your blog for about a month and I think your paintings are absolutely beautiful. I love your sense of color and design.

sitting on the fence, admiring the view from both sides, forming conclusions, drawing inspiration from the landscape of ideas in both directions...having an open mind...these are very scary propositions for many...the narrow path is easier negotiable, thinking inside the box is rather warm & snuggly...

indeed refusing to turn to ones neighbor and smile and shake a hand (as is a tradition in many a church regardless of denomination)is truly more scary...being human isn't hard, sad that many are not too good at it yet...

even George Wallace saw the light in his later years...too bad many have not yet...

keep painting the pics and speaking your thoughts, in being human, you are closer to the head of the class than many

Its sad yet predictable to see the reaction of some people about Obama. Ignorance breeds viewpoints like this.

What really disturbs me is that they air them in public and on camera. I wonder if this piece ever made it to the local news and if so, what was the reaction?

Watching from the sidelines in Canada I'm hoping Obama wins too. Palin's a trainwreck waiting to happen.

Hey, post a clip from Al Jazeera, see an America full of racists and morons! But I'm sure it's an unbiased report. I bet no one they interviewed said, "I support McCain's economic policies" or anything reasonable like that.

Tracy Helgeson said...

Katherine, ok, glad to know what you meant, I wasn't entirely sure. I liked the article you linked to, it was a nice look at Obama.

Robin from Berne, thanks and I hope you know that I was referring to my father's side of the family in MN, not my mom's!

Thanks Pamela, so glad to meet a new reader and I appreciate the support concerning trolls:)

thanks Hattermad, very thoughtful words, never much doubt that I would vote for the democrat candidate but I admit to not fully supporting Obama. I am closer now, at least as close as I can be considering all the rhetoric that is typically spewed during the campaigns.

Jeanette, I know, I can't imagine what people are thinking while they say such things in front of a camera. I guess they believe what they think as strongly as what we do. Of course the clips could be taken out of context, but I didn't really get that feeling after watching this a few times.

Chris, well, of course Al Jazeera has an agenda, just like most news orgs do these days (hello! Fox!), and so certainly that could be taken into account. But like I said, I have no doubt that there are more than a few folks in this country who believe this stuff about Obama.
